And the nominee is

I posted in the comments at Munuviana about asking the Belmont Club to join in. Jim's got another one along the same lines. These are far more political than most of the current Munu blogs but seem to fit in with the general Munu flavour of rationality.

I'd understand if people felt this was outside the Munu "vibe". On the other hand it could lend gravitas to the whole Munu project. Ummm, sorry, no offence to y'all. Moreover I've not even asked the Belmont person himself so don't know that he'd be interested. But I figure we need to decide first.

It's a good question. What do people think?

Simon,

Y'all? Have you been standing too close to me?

Posted by: Alex at April 7, 2004 09:55 AM

I don't see a problem with political commentary so long as it's done rationally.

I was just about to nominate Belmont Club myself. Wretchard is, quite frankly, brilliant.

Posted by: Debbye at April 7, 2004 02:57 PM

Wretchard is more rational than a barrel of monkeys. Though I don't always agree with him.

Posted by: Pixy Misa at April 7, 2004 03:19 PM

I like his style. Buy him a beer!

I actually think we have a lot of blogs on the Muni list that are political. The only non-poly one that I can see is mine, but I have the "mental health" area covered.

I'm not nuts about censorship, but I'm also not nuts about Munu becoming associated with the right-wingers.

And if that Kim Du Toit idiot joins Munu, I'm leaving. There's just not enough room in Munuviana for the two of us!

I looked at the links on Belmost Club and did not see a single munu blog or hardly any other blogs other than big political bloggers linked. I thought munu was more about populist blogs than elitist blogs. Of course, that is my take.

LeeAnn and Stevie aren't exactly political either. The point is more that most of the MuNu blogs cover a mixture of topics. Daily life, humour, silly quizzes, geeky stuff, and a bit of politics here and there.

Belmont Club is purely political. I mean, even Steven den Beste gives us anime reviews and talks about engineering and spaceflight and spam filters and such.

I get the feeling we're tending to no on this one, which is fine.

Posted by: Simon at April 8, 2004 02:09 AM

Although I am about as new as new can get here, I didn't really imagine that mu.nu was the sort of place which generally gave itself over to a lot of 'I don't care what they have, so long as it isn't X-wing' (Or Y-wing). Perhaps rational political blogs might be all right if they derive their value from something above and beyond pure rational discussion of politics - like humor, or anime, or something.

By way of examples, My Pet Jawa strikes me as being peculiarly funny from time to time. From Australia, Professor Bunyip is quite striking for his use of language.

Just a thought.

I like Professor Bunyip a lot. Hadn't thought of him. :)

Posted by: Pixy Misa at April 8, 2004 09:06 PM

I like Bunyip too, he's on my roll already. Going to look at Jawa. But what's the consensus on this?

I read Wretchard daily, so I'm hardly neutral.

She/he has the gift of brevity and is very analytical. Yes, it's all about politics and battle strategy, but being in a state of war tend to inform your outlook.

One of the things I consider a plus is that he/she doesn't engage in attacks on political figures (or other bloggers) but strictly on the facts.

I never really noticed the blogroll until it was mentioned here, and Wretchard rarely links other bloggers. I guess those are downsides.

Posted by: Debbye at April 9, 2004 05:04 AM

I'm inclined towards inviting him/her. His/her/its blog is that good.

Whether he/she/it/they want(s) to be associated with us, on the other hand... ;)
